Getting Started
The results from our 2013 State of DevOps Report made one thing clear: Automation is key to high performance, whether that's in the form of faster deployments, fewer errors or faster recovery when trouble does come along. We published a walkthrough and video demo that illustrates how simple it is to automate a small pain point with Puppet Enterprise:
Get More Agile: Learn How to Automate One Small Thing
Once you've watched that, you'll be ready to download a copy of Puppet Enterprise and start experimenting with your own automation projects.
See Your Infrastructure
The importance of establishing a single source of truth was another key recommendation from the DevOps Report:
"Knowing the current state of everything you're managing, whether it's inside the firewall or out in the cloud, provides a way to allocate resources, plan for maintenance, or respond quickly to emerging issues."
Puppet Labs engineer Zach Leslie recorded a demo of the node inventory tools in Puppet Enterprise, showing how they provide a constantly updated, automated look into your infrastructure. If you've been living out of Excel instead of planning for bigger and better projects, it's time to drop the spreadsheet and use Puppet Enterprise.
The Puppet Enterprise tools are a great way to get started without writing a single line of code: Just install Puppet Enterprise on 10 nodes for free and start seeing your infrastructure.
IT Automation with VMWare
If you're heavily invested in virtual infrastructure, you know the challenges: VM sprawl, maintaining consistent configuration, provisioning and tearing down VMs at the speed your business demands. Puppet Enterprise is an exceptional tool for dealing with these challenges. Read why you want to start using Puppet Enterprise with VMware today.
Puppet Master Power-Ups
We covered plenty for advanced users this past month, too:
- In our podcast, Eric Sorenson and Henrik Lindberg chatted with the community team on how to make enhancement proposals with Puppet Armatures.
- Puppet 3.2 was released, introducing a new, experimental Puppet DSL parser with some interesting new iteration features.
- PuppetDB 1.3 arrived too, introducing new and powerful reporting features: Query events by timestamp, resource type/title/property, event status and more.

DevOps in Action
Organizations using DevOps practices deploy code up to 30 times more frequently than their competitors, and 50 percent fewer of their deployments fail, so you'd think there would be lots of DevOps engineers out there. However, just 18 percent of our survey respondents said someone in their organization actually had this title. That prompted us to ask, "what is a DevOps engineer?"
Puppet Labs' James Turnbull was also thinking about the state of DevOps this past month, and wrote up his thoughts in Wired magazine: "DevOps Today: Growing and Thriving"
Community
The Puppet community keeps growing, thanks to contributions from open source developers:
- If you're wondering about how to start contributing to Puppet code, our podcast Community Contributions to Puppet is for you.
- Our last Puppet Community Metrics post showed we have 5,685 members in our Puppet-Users group. Find out more fun trivia about the Puppet community here!
- Community is important to the people headed for PuppetConf, too: We interviewed two engineers heading to PuppetConf 2013 and learned how PuppetConf puts them in touch with the people writing code they use and depend on every day.
