I decided to change the title to "Cloudy Journey" because of the changing market and my skill set.
Market
The market is so much more than just server virtualization. There is the whole cloud movement which includes IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. On-Premise Private Clouds & Hosted Hybrid Clouds. Software-defined Networks (SDN), and DevOps. I also see a shift in the nature of the type of work required by System Administrators/Engineers. It used to be good to be a specialist, nowadays, you need to know sys admin, route/switch and development.
Skill Set
When I left the corporate world in May 2011, I was primarily a Windows guy. I did Citrix(XenApp, XenServer, Provisioning Services), Microsoft(Windows Server 2000/2003/2008R1/R2) and Altiris. I could script but mostly in .cmd and .bat files. The company I worked for was split like most large enterprises, Wintel team, Network team, DB team, Storage team, Backup team,..etc.
While there I was isolated into my bucket and didn't have to worry about anything outside of my bucket. If I needed something done, it was a meeting with another team to discuss what was needed, then waited until it was done.
I spent my free time gaming:)
Working for a solution/service provider is awesome. I am exposed to so much more. In my current position, while I still do Citrix and Microsoft, I do more product development of solutions that we offer.
It was right around August 2011 when Citrix bought Cloud.com. Being a Citrix guy, I just had to try it. You talk about a learning curve. I hadn't messed with Linux since the late 1990's, and even that was limited, remember I was a MS guy. Then there was the the MySQL piece.
So since that time, I have designed and implemented an internal private cloud based of Citrix CloudPlatform for our internal use.
My skill set has increased based on just implementations, however I am nowhere near the the level of my prior Citrix and MS skills.
Learning
1. I am transitioning from Altiris to either Chef or Puppet (have decided on which one yet). I have Chef installed on my Macbook and have the learning Puppet VM installed on VirtualBox
2. Linux learning by studying for CompTia's Linux+.
3. Completed a basic MySQL course from InfiniteSkills on Udemy
4. Completed GitReal & GitReal 2 (Git & Github training) from CodeSchool.
5. Currently taking a beginners course on Ruby from InfiniteSkills on Udemy
6. Completed a HTML and CSS course on CodeAcademy
7. I have bought courses on Udemy for CCNA 2013 and CCNA Security, PHP & MySQL. I just haven't got to them yet
I guess I proved that you can teach an old dog new tricks!
So the title "Cloudy Journey" is appropriate as I continue to learn the new skills for the changing market while still keep current skills up.
