Videos from Build a Cloud Day at LISA '13

Build a Cloud Day was co-located with LISA '13 (Large Installation Systems Administration) this year in Washington D.C. The program was designed to expose attendees to the concepts and best practices around deploying cloud computing infrastructure. Attendees learned how to deploy a cloud computing environment using CloudStack and other cloud infrastructure tools including those from Xen, Puppet Labs, SolidFire, GlusterFS and RiakCS.

The recordings of each presentation are now available for viewing.

Better, Faster, Cheaper Infrastructure with Apache CloudStack and Riak CS by John Burwell, Consulting Engineer at Basho Technologies

Software is eating infrastructure. By pulling reliability and scalability responsibilities up the stack from hardware into software, object stores such as Basho's Riak CS and cloud orchestration platforms such as Apache CloudStack increase the utilization of compute and storage resources by dynamically shifting workloads based on demand. Together, those platforms can saturate compute and storage of 1000s of hosts with strong operational visibility and end-user self-service.

This talk will cover the following topics to explore private cloud design principles and best practices:

Why Private Cloud?
Anatomy of a Private Cloud
Building a Apache CloudStack Compute Offering
Large Object Storage using Riak CS
Your Own Private Cloud: The Riak CS Apache CloudStack Integration Roadmap

John Burwell is a Consulting Engineer at Basho Technologies -- makers of the open source Riak distributed key value database and Riak CS object store. He also serves as a Apache CloudStack PMC member and committer focused on storage architecture and security integration. An incurable chocoholic, John has spent the last 15 years designing and building distributed systems to solve physical security, cloud provisioning, and supply chain problems.

Provision your own cloud with Razor by David Lutterkoft, Principal Engineer, PuppetLabs

Razor is a flexible provisioning tool that makes it easy to control how machines are built based on rules and policies. It maintains an inventory of nodes and their hardware characteristics, gathered by booting each node into a discovery image. Razor is an opinionated tool that focuses narrowly on provisioning, but makes it easy to hand off a node after installation to a configuration management system like Puppet to perform more complicated setup tasks and for ongoing maintenance. This talk will give an overview of Razor's capabilities and provide some hands-on examples about its use.

David is a principal engineer at Puppet Labs and the technical lead for Puppet Labs' development of Razor. Before joining Puppet Labs, David worked at Red Hat on a variety of management tools and served as the maintainer of apache Deltacloud. He was one of the earliest contributors to Puppet, and is the main author of the Augeas configuration management tool.

Key Design Considerations for Your Cloud Storage by Mike Tutkowski, Developer, SolidFire

Whether you are a service provider looking to deliver cloud services or an enterprise looking to build a shared infrastructure/private cloud, the topic of storage is likely one of your top design challenges. There are quite a few approaches to building cloud storage and numerous point solutions to consider. So, where do you start and what questions should you be asking? In this session we will cover architectural topics including:

• Accommodating multiple workloads
• Building a scalable infrastructure
• Data protection strategy impact on overall design
• Monitoring and management needs

Attendees of this session will leave with an improved grasp of these key considerations in an effort to help to enhance overall cloud storage design.

Securing your Cloud with the Xen Hypervisor by Russell Pavlicek, Xen Project Evangelist, Citrix

The Xen Project produces a mature, enterprise-grade virtualization technology designed for the Cloud featuring many advanced and unique security features. For this reason, it's a hypervisor of choice for government agencies like NSA and the DoD, as well as for new security-minded projects the QubesOS Secure Desktop. However, while much of the security of Xen is inherent in its design, many of the advanced security features, such as stub domains, driver domains, and Xen Security Modules (XSM), are not enabled by default. This session will describe many of the advanced security features of Xen, as well as explaining why Xen is an excellent choice for secure Clouds.

Russell Pavlicek has been a speaker at over 50 open source conferences. A Linux user since 1995, he was an Open Source columnist for Infoworld and Processor magazines, as well as a former panelist on The Linux Show weekly webcast. He authored one of the earliest books on the Open Source movement and has over 20 years experience as a software consultant. He is currently employed by Citrix Systems as evangelist for the Xen Project.

Deploying Unified Storage With GlusterFS by Jeff Darcy, GlusterFS

This talk will start by introducing some of the features, philosophy, and basic concepts behind GlusterFS. Following that, we'll dive right into setting up a GlusterFS cluster to provide block, file and object storage. To wrap up, we'll explain how to do some of the more common administrative tasks such as adding or removing storage in GlusterFS.

Jeff Darcy has worked on network and distributed storage systems for twenty years, including an instrumental role in developing MPFS (a precursor of modern pNFS) while at EMC. He is currently a member of the GlusterFS architecture team at Red Hat, and frequently gives talks and tutorials about topics related to cloud storage.
