Join OpenDaylight in Germany this October
// OpenDaylight blogs

In less than 15 months since it formed, OpenDaylight has used code development to overcome networking's toughest challenges and has quickly become the de facto standard for open SDN. The community's second software release is due this fall, and we're excited to host events that allow developers, end users, network engineers and the OpenDaylight community to gather and discuss the industry's evolution from proprietary to open source SDN solutions.

For developers looking for more hands-on technical content, OpenDaylight will host our first HackFest in Europe at LinuxCon + CloudOpen Düsseldorf on October 13. The OpenDaylight HackFest will focus on introducing new community members and providing hands-on workshops to build SDN applications on OpenDaylight. Attendees will get the chance to engage with the community and gain technical insight from the project's leading developers. Use the code ODHACK20 to receive 20% off your registration.

We're also hosting an OpenDaylight Mini-Summit at SDN & OpenFlow World Congress in Düsseldorf, Germany on October 14. The Mini-Summit will be a one-day track to cover SDN, OpenDaylight architecture, upcoming code releases and technical deep dives into virtualized networks and cloud deployments.

We are pleased to announce the following sessions:

Enabling Carrier Grade Network Function Virtualization (NFV) with OpenStack and SDN
The emergence of Northbound Interfaces (NBIs) in controllers is causing significant changes to the way the industry deploys datacenter network solutions. Operators' plans to deploy NFV using technologies like Service Function Chaining (SFC) are lining up with rapidly maturing SDN technology in such a way that we can expect this to be an area where SDN-based deployment is common. Dave Lenrow, HP, and Chris Price, Ericsson, will discuss the technical issues and industry initiatives that may shape the deployment of complex virtual network functions using OpenStack.

OpenDaylight Developer Panel moderated by Phil Robb, Linux Foundation
Developers Curt Beckmann, Chris Price and Dave Lenrow will explore key projects featured in the Helium release, challenges encountered during the project's first year and solutions found during code development, emerging use cases for software-defined networking. The panel will conclude with audience Q&A.

Delivering Policy Driven Infrastructure in OpenDaylight
Uri Elzer, Cisco, and Mike Cohen, Intel, will discuss the role that OpenDaylight's controller plays in the bigger context of software-defined infrastructure, including compute, network and storage, especially as the rate of cloud deployments increases. The discussion will also cover how OpenDaylight projects like Group-Based Policy and OpFlex offer a path to achieving the level of automation needed to manage both physical and virtual environments, including vSwitch on servers.

Behind the Scenes: How to Enforce Group-Based Policy with OpenFlow
As open source software finds its way into multi-tenant data centers, the demand for open source policy models with a proper level of abstraction rises. Thomas Graf of Noiro Networks will lead this discussion on the Group-Based Policy Project and its work with open standards and projects OpenFlow, OpFlex, OVSDB, and Open vSwitch to incorporate policies into the data plane.

OpenDaylight Service Function Chaining Use Cases
Abhijit Kumbhare and Chris Price of Ericsson will provide a technical overview to OpenDaylight's Service Function Chaining and its capabilities in OpenDaylight-based network deployments. The talk will also include discussion around OpenFlow-based network substrates, use cases and deployment challenges.

Experiences Implementing a BGP/MPLS VPN Prototype with OpenDaylight
OpenDaylight developer Ronald van der Pol will share his experience implementing a prototype built in the Community Connection (CoCo) service project, a European GN3plus funded Open Call project. He will explain how operators and research communities can use this OpenFlow application to set up multi-domain VPNs and other use cases with OpenDaylight.

We hope to see you at an upcoming event!
